A GUIDE TO THE REVISIONS TO THE INDUSTRIAL LAND USE PLAN

Since 1998, the State of Rhode Island has been involved, with several private sector partners, in the Showcase State Initiative for Natural Disaster Resistance and Resilience.  The purpose of the Initiative is to help Rhode Island communities reduce deaths, injuries, property damage, economic losses, and human suffering caused by natural disasters.  Part of this effort is to prevent, to the greatest extent possible, natural hazard events from escalating into disasters.  These natural hazard events include hurricanes, floods, and ice storms.

In 2001, the Statewide Planning Program revised the Industrial Land Use Plan to include language pertaining to the mitigation of natural hazard events.  This included an explanation of hazard mitigation and why it is important when making economic development decisions.  This discussion led to additions to the goals and implementation mechanisms in the plan.

The revisions posted on this site are substitutions for existing pages in the Industrial Land Use Plan.  Along with similar revisions to the Economic Development Policies and Plan, they were approved by the State Planning Council on August 9, 2001.

The revisions include a graphic, Table 212-06(2), that was inadvertently omitted from the Industrial Land Use Plan in its first printing.  It should be inserted as a new page.  We apologize for any inconvenience.
